In additon to sea walls, offshore breakwaters are used at East Coast Park for coastal protection.
Offshore breakwaters and huge concrete blocks and natural break waters placed offshore to break waves further out to sea, reducing their energy at the coast. Thus, reducing erosion at the coast. This leads to longer beaches which which the reduced wave energy to protect the cliffs and settlements behind. They are very effective and have less impact on other areas of the coast line.
Limitations:
They are very expensive to build and may not last very long. Careful consideration of local tide conditions is needed.
