Introduction to Our Project
Sunday, July 11, 2010
For our geography project, the five of us, Shu Ying, Christy, Yichuan, Zhu Yu and Daniel visited 3 coastal protection sites in Singapore. These include East Coast Park, West Coast Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve.

Locations
- East Coast Park is located on the southeastern coast of Singapore.
- West Coast Park is located in West Coast, Singapore, parallel to West Coast Highway.
- Labrador Nature Reserve is located in Pasir Panjang.

At each site we learned about about the coastal protection measure used there, and we researched on the limitations each measure had.

INTRODUCTION TO COASTAL MANAGEMENT

Coastal protection is the used of various techniques to prevent erosion and flooding at the coast.

The Coastal Zone
The coastal zone is a very important area as it houses more that 50 percent of the world population. IT contain valuable natural resoures and is used for many commercial and industrial activities such as fishing, shipping, and tourism. The area is a also a natural habitat to various animal species. However due to it vulnerabilty to natural change, shore protection is required to prevent flooding and erosion.

Coastal Protection Methods

Measures used to prevent erosion and flooding near the coast include:

The building of Groynes, Sea walls, Revetments, Rock armours, Gabions, and Offshore breakwaters, and using Cliff stabilization, Entrance training walls, Floodgates, Beach nourishment, Sand dune stabilization, and Beach drainage.

Subsequent posts will explain how some of these measures are used for Coastal Protection in Singapore.

Labrador Nature Reserve
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benefits:
In Labrador Nature Reserve, seawalls built of rock and concrete along the coast are used for coastal protection. Seawalls destroy the incident energy of the waves, so that the reflected waves are lower there is less turbulence. Being rock and concrete in nature, it is very hard and is less likely to suffer the effects of erosion than the natural coast of sand.

Limitations:
However, sea walls are very expensive to built costing between $4000 to $7000 per metre (£2000 - £5000 per metre)  If the sea walls are poorly designed constant care is necessary as waves erode the base of the seawall.
Sea walls can also cause beaches to break up making them useless for tourism. The construction of seawalls also destroys the beauty of the natural landscape in the area.

Extras:
Beach Drainage (seen in the picture) also prevents flooding.

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
West Coast Park

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benefits:
In West Coast Park, in addition to sea walls, cliff stablization is used. Cliff stabilization can be done by the draining of excess rainwater. Cliff drainage is used to hold a cliff together using plants, fences and or terracing, this is used to help prevent landslides and other natural disasters. The plants also hold the soil in place and prevents coastal erosion.

Limitations:
Cliff Stabilization changes the cliff's hydrology will may result in negative impacts to the ecology in that area.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benefits:
In additon to sea walls, offshore breakwaters are used at East Coast Park for coastal protection.
Offshore breakwaters and huge concrete blocks and natural break waters placed offshore to break waves further out to sea, reducing their energy at the coast. Thus, reducing erosion at the coast. This leads to longer beaches which which the reduced wave energy to protect the cliffs and settlements behind. They are very effective and have less impact on other areas of the coast line.
Limitations:
They are very expensive to build and may not last very long. Careful consideration of local tide conditions is needed.
